Pillar Arc

I’ve begun to appreciate public art more and more as maybe is evident by the theme of some recent posts. While in Seattle recently for a conference, I frequented a little plaza outside of the downtown courthouse. It was a block away from the conference center and was a nice respite when I needed it. I was drawn by a large sculpture. It was rough hewn with lichens growing in the cracks, amorphous in shape but upright, and thin at the bottom but bulbous at the top. I had no idea what it was. After some internet research, I now know it is called Pillar Arc and was made by Ming Fay. That large shape is a single scale of a cedar cone enlarged to monumental proportions. I find it a fitting and humbling reminder of the nearby landscape for those that pass by the courthouse every day, but I wonder how few people have stopped to look.
