Maps and art

I’m constantly on the looking for new and interesting ways to use maps and here are a couple of very unique examples.

  • There is a sub-genre of embroidery that replicates aerial imagery of the countryside. I find the textures you can get with this medium to be fascinating and much richer than a simple picture.
  • Artist Matthew Cusick uses cut and pasted portions of maps as a medium generate intricately detailed portraits, landscapes and other scenes. I appreciate how Cusick’s mosaics, in the authors own works, “integrated mythology with territory” to tell a complex story.
