Cognitive Bias
I’ve received all sorts of technical training on how to drive a Mars rover, but very little on all the psychological biases that influence our decision making. There’s confirmation bias (am I only seeing information that supports the ideas I’ve already committed to in my head?), groupthink (am I going along with this only because a couple of others think it is a good idea?), anchoring (am I leaning towards an option just because it was the first one suggested?), experience bias (are we doing this just because the expert suggested it?) and sunk cost (am I continuing with this bad plan only because I’ve already committed time to it?) among others. We work in a pressure cooker environment where these biases can magnify and multiply quickly, and I’ve found untangling my hidden cognitive biases to be one of the more demanding parts of my job.
