Traverses

I like to think that I put more than average brain cycles towards thinking about routes and traverse paths. My job requires it after all and I’m predisposed due to hobbies like hiking and backpacking which require good route knowledge. I’m always on the lookout for new styles and types of maps that represent route knowledge and recently came across some spectacular representations of Spirit and Opportunity’s traverses on Mars while at a friend’s house. I really love the simplicity of the maps combined with the slight three-dimensionality of the letterpress technique. Despite all the detail I try to take in from topographical maps, I think this is how we most often remember routes. Just a simple line, a few direction changes, and some important waypoints along the way.
